20TH ANNIVERSARY FOR FRACHT ADELAIDE

Congratulations to our Adelaide team! Our company in South Australia turned 20 on 1 July 2011. Under the expert leadership of Henk Graalman, Fracht Adelaide has consistently achieved very good results for the last 20 years and delivered superior customer care to importers and exporters in South Australia. Well done and good luck for the next 20 years!

AROUND THE WORLD

•After handling more than 4.2 million tonnes of cargo in the financial year ended 31 March 2011, HONG KONG IS NOW THE BUSIEST AIR CARGO GATEWAY IN THE WORLD. Passenger numbers also reached new heights which enabled the airport to make an excellent profit of USD 0.5 billion.
•The Federation of Indian Export Organisation expressed serious concerns ABOUT DELAYS AND CONGESTION AT CHENNAI'S AIRPORT. This results in significant problems for just-in-time delilvery schedules, inventory control and production.
•Freight forwarders, shippers, express companies and several international airlines are very UNHAPPY ABOUT INDONESIA'S RECENT AIR CARGO SCREENING CHANGES. The new screening process involves only three "regulated agents" which were deemed not secure when compared to previous arrangements with one screening location three hours away from Jakarta airport. Loading and unloading cargo before lodgement at the airport terminal also increases costs.

CARBON TAX

Without a doubt the carbon tax which the Australian Government plans to introduce will have an effect on international and domestic logistics. The ATA (Australian Trucking Association) of course is pleased that the road transport industry will be exempted from the carbon tax. On the other hand the ARA (Australian Railway Association) is very unhappy with the carbon tax which will have a "perverse effect on rail transport, essentially punishing environmentally friendly rail while rewarding heavy road vehicles".

AUSTRALIAN TERMINALS

•Menzies Aviation Brisbane moved into a NEW 10,000 M2 TERMINAL at Rosa Street, Eagle Farm on 5 July 2011. The building is located on the International Terminal side of Qantas Freight.
•Customs and border protection staff joined the Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O’Connor on 20 July 2011 in Melbourne's Container Examination Facility to celebrate the ONE MILLIONTH X-RAY OF A SEA CARGO CONTAINER in Australia. On this occasion the minister also witnessed the x-ray and unpacking of a recent seizure of 16.8 tonnes of illicit loose tobacco worth almost AUD8 million in foregone duties and GST. The first x-ray facility was opened in 2002 and today Customs x-ray more than 101,500 containers each year around Australia.
•The National Union of Workers (NUW) conducted INDUSTRIAL ACTION and stop works at Sydney's Qantas Terminals on 16th, 17th, 19th, 23rd and 24th of July.
•Due to bad weather, high winds and dangerous swells SYDNEY PORTS CEASED OPERATION for several days during week 29. A stop work meeting by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) on the 22nd of July added to the chaos and delays.

•QANTAS LOWERED THE FUEL SURCHARGE from North America to USD 1.10 per kilo.

SEAFREIGHT NEWS

•After much anticipation the WORLD'S LARGEST ROLL ON / ROLL OFF VESSEL (Fracht Logistics News June), the MV Tonsberg arrived in Melbourne on 7 July 2011. WWL - the owner of this Mark V vessel, celebrates its 150th anniversary this year and one of the original founders, Morten Wilhelm Wilhelmsen was born in the Norwegian town of Tonsberg.
•WWL WILL INCREASE THE EMERGENCY FUEL SURCHARGE from North America to 55% on 5 August 2011 and Armacup Express Car Lines has introduced a NEW 10% BAF (Bunker Adjustment Factor) on their service from China, Korea and Japan to Australia. At the same time MSC REDUCED their BAF from North Asia to USD620.00 per TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit) effective 30 July 2011.
•A GRI (GENERAL RATE INCREASE) of USD300.00 / TEU from South East Asia and USD250.00 from North Asia has been announced by most shipping lines. This is due to take effect in August. As the market is still relatively soft the carriers may not be able to implement the full GRI.
