South Africa Port Strike
11.10.2022

Dear friends,

Thousands of UNTU (United National Transport Union) downed tools from 00h01 on 6th October after a protracted wage dispute

Transnet followed by declaring Force Majeure the same day. SATAWU (South Africa Transport Allied Workers Union) has joined the strike effective 10/10/2022. Regrettably, Transnet is unable to advise how long the strike will continue for. Currently all ports are not working, even though the Cape has one terminal on standby. The stabilization levy of R110 per container which was being implemented by Transnet effective 15th October to mitigate any possible strike action has since been retracted.

Both container and bulk terminals have been affected. As a result, meeting export stacks have been affected due to little or no bookings being allowed. We can expect delays in departure and berthing of vessels at the respective terminals.
