Road tax / toll in Belgium as of 1st April 2016

Starting April 2016, Belgium will introduce a new distance-based toll system for all vehicles with a permissible total weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes. Therefore, new toll rates will apply to the regions of Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. From then on, the time-based vignette will be replaced by the new electronic, route-dependent toll system using the On-Board Unit (OBU).

On-Board Units are available via the online portal of the toll provider and at point-of-sale terminals (POS), since 1st October 2015. The box deposit is 135 EUR per OBU.

The new toll system will be valid on national highways and motorways which previously could have been payed with the eurovignette. 300 km additional toll roads are planned in the region of Wallonia as well as the entire road network of Brussels will expand the toll network even further in the future.

The amount of the toll depends on the max. permissible weight and the emissions class of the domestic and foreign trucks. In Brussels, the road category is also taken into account to calculate the toll amount.

Toll rates on highways and the regions of Wallonia and Flanders are equal.
The following toll rates apply to all other roads.
