Brazil: potential Customs strike to affect cargo clearance
« back

Dear All,

Please be informed the Customs officers from Santos port announced strikes as from November 1st if the Government does not increase their salaries this month. Until there, they will reduce the workers force to 30%.

They are warning the market about their plans to not do any customs clearance, except medicines, hospital products, live animals and food, but it is important to clarify their power of action is under the yellow and red light files, which represent less than 10%. The green light files are automatically customs-cleared by their EDP system.

The concerns are the Christmas shipments which are arriving in this period and most of them come from China and are subject to yellow/red lights, it means, documents or physical inspections.

By other side, some urgent orders shall be switched to airfreight and as this modal is already very congested, we guess it will cause more chaos we are living today.

Although it was informed last week, we did not face any problems to run our customs clearance in Santos until now.

Just for your better information.

Atenciosamente / Best Regards

Denise Alves
